“The sinuses in this horse were completely rotten. Long standing infection with major complications and multiple problems. Most of the “normal” tissue had rotted or was infected and had to debrided (removed) There was also a need to flush with a very large volume and heavy pressure to help remove large amounts of pus and dead tissue and restore drainage from the sinues to the nose. The holes heal very quickly in horses heads. The flushing, antibiotics, antiinflammatories and further debridement (cleaning) will continue for several weeks. Foreign bodies are not a real problem, the horse will wear a fly mask and anything that enters the sinus will not be likely to cause any infection esp compared to what was already in there. That means the horse will be receiving pain killers throughout the process, it is actually better to perform this process standing as there is LESS blood loss, no anaesthestic risk, and the cost is reduced. Horses tolerate this type of surgery very well, this mare was only concerned when a finger was placed in the tip of her nostril, as for the trephines etc they really don’t react. Remember they have pain relief, nerve blocks and sedation on board.” - EDV
This is a very interesting case that was brought to our attention and posted on the Equine Dental Vets page.
