The Chinese Pangolin appears like a scaly anteater. From head to body, it measures around 60 cm (24 inches) and its tail measures about 18 cm (7 inches). A mature Chinese pangolin weighs about 2.4 kg (82.72 oz). A new born baby pangolin weighs about 93 gram (3.26 oz). It has 18 rows of overlapping scales accompanied with hair, a rare combination found in mammals. It has a small narrow mouth and a little pointed head. Its nose is plump with nostrils at its end. This is a bronze colored animal with a round body equipped with extremely sharp claws.

Spiny mice are some of the most aptly named animals around. They are rodents, related to mice and rats, and their backs are covered with spiny hairs rather like those of hedgehogs, albeit not as rigid. Although a hedgehog’s spines are defensive, those of spiny mice are probably too soft to hurt a predator. They might turn out to be sensory organs, a little like whiskers.
Ecologists in Kenya would sometimes catch a live spiny mouse in a trap and try to pick it up, but to no avail. “Often it would take off and they’d be left with a piece of skin in their hands,” says Ashley Seifert of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Sceptical but intrigued, Seifert travelled to Kenya to see for himself.

Like many animals that display autotomy, spiny mice can regenerate their lost tissues rapidly, just as salamanders can regrow tails. Spiny mice regrow the skin on their backs, including the normal hairs and the spines, and without scarring.

TURTLE FROGMyobatrachus gouldii© Julian Bentley/frogs.org.au
NOT A TURTLE, NOT A FROG - this is a mash-up of both - turtle and frog with a little alien thrown in for good measure. It’s a real animal the aptly named Turtle Frog and is endemic to Southwestern Australia.
A very peculiar frog with a body shape resembling a small turtle with its shell removed. The head is very small, with reduced eyes, and quite distinct from the body, unlike most other frogs. The limbs are short but muscular. This species burrows forward through the sand, unlike most of arid-adapted burrowing frogs that use their hind feet and descend backwards in to the soil. The back color ranges from pink to a uniform light to dark brown.
Lays up to 50 eggs. There is no tadpole stage as the embryo goes through its entire development in the egg capsule and emerges as a small but fully formed frog.
